The Project
QinetiQ were building a system to enhance the information available to drivers through in-car satellite navigation systems. The aim was to allow drivers to plan journeys based on cost, environmental impact and changing circumstances (for example: local weather or car park occupancy).
The system relies on real-time information to provide updates to the driver en-route, and automatically recalculate the optimum journey.
QinetiQ has the expertise to deploy the on-board units and the satellite tracking systems, but needed a software platform to manage the diverse real-time data feeds.
The Solution
QinetiQ engaged Rockshore to deploy an instance of the Rockshore Event Processing Platform (REPP); enabling the aggregation, routing, processing and seamless delivery of real-time information.

Rockshore engaged the data feed providers, and integrated the required feeds into the REPP.
- Using the REPP Complex Event Processing module, the REPP converts the raw data into defined business events (for example “car park A is full”)
- Events are filtered prior to sending to QinetiQ’s system, with the REPP ensuring only relevant events are sent
- Events are delivered in real-time, directly to the QinetiQ system in a single, clean data feed
- Finally, Rockshore built and hosted a web portal for user login/use of the system
Use of the REPP de-risked the AVAS project substantially by managing the real-time datafeeds and providing us with a single, event based stream of information. Rockshore delivered the platform under tight time frames, contributing significantly towards the overall success of the project

The final system takes user inputs on origin/destination and presents alternate route plans on various options including cost of journey, C02 emissions, car park availability/location.
