Learn how Rockshore worked in conjunction with BT to deliver a retail portal to Manchester with an integrated multi-modal travel planner.
The Project
BT were developing a new concept in city-focussed web portals - well designed portals that showcase the best a city has to offer in business, shopping, entertainment and transport.
Critically, the portals would integrate multiple real-time data feeds relevant to the city; including weather, news feeds, traffic updates, regional bus, tram and train information and a national journey planner.
BT needed a flexible and scalable product development team to bring the product to market to meet an aggressive timeframe for the first portal: Manchester.
The Solution
BT engaged Rockshore to deploy the Manchester Portal on an instance of the Rockshore Event Processing Platform (REPP).
The REPP enabled the seamless delivery of real-time information management underpinning the Portal services.

Rockshore’s expert real-time information analysts engaged the data feed suppliers, developing detailed specifications of the available information and system connectivity.
This information allowed the BT team to design the Portal and its services without access to live data feeds.
Rockshore integrated each data feed within the REPP, and hosted the Portal website environment
The hosted platform allows BT is to interact with and develop the Portal services within a single environment – without impacting the real-time data provision.
Advantages of the Rockshore Event Processing Platform
The Manchester Portal project demonstrates the advantage of the REPP:
- Easy integration of real-time data feeds minimising development time, cost and risk
- Built-in Complex Event Processing to translate streams of technical data into real-world business events minimising processing time and complexity
- Rapid deployment as a Rockshore Managed Service minimised project time line, capital investment and ongoing support
BT were able to focus on developing useful Portal services, confident in the REPP’s capability to provide valuable real-time information “out-of-the-box”.
